RAJANAGAR - DON BOSCO
History
Rajanagar is situated about 73 km from Tinsukia and 44 km from Digboi. It is the only Catholic Centre in the Changlang District. The people who inhabit the area are Noctes, Tangsas, Singaphos, Kamtis, Adivasis and Nepalis. There are about 40 villages that the centre caters to. When the centre began, there were 19 Catholic villages nearby which were looked after from the centre. Eight out of the 19 villages are in the Lohit District and the rest form part of the Changlang district.
The village of Rajanagar was inaugurated in 1976 by Lt Governor K.A. Raja of Arunachal Pradesh and the village was named after him. The land was allotted by the King and the people were brought (about 120 families) from Dadem, Chinkoi, Hoakham village of Khonsa circle. The people had approached the government for land. Under the tribal development scheme it was thought expedient to bring another stronger tribe to protect the fast dwindling number of Singphos.
Because of the overwhelming response of the people to Catholic faith Bro. Sevanand Lugun (DBLA) began residing at Rajanagar from 11th February 1992. The construction of the present Church was started soon after that. The new church was completed and blessed on 10th July 1992 by Fr. Palliparambil George.
St. Joseph Lower Primary School was started in 1993. It was inaugurated on 29th August 1993 by Fr. Sebastian Karottupuram sdb of Bosco Bible School. The new school building was blessed on 12th June 1996 by Mgr. Joseph Aind sdb. It was inaugurated on 10th October 1996 by the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Mr. C.C. Singpho. Fr. Lazarus Kujur was transferred to the Tinsukia Parish on 2nd January 1998. On 18th February 1998 Fr. Devassy Palatty joined the Rajanagar Mission.
Today
In 2007, the mission is a full-fledged parish and has 14 villages in its jurisdiction. In 2006, Don Bosco School, Rajanagar was upgraded to Class V and in 2007 to Class VI. There is a hostel for boys and girls. There 30 students in the hostel, 20 boys and 10 girls
