History
Tinsukia has been serving as a quasi parish having regular Sunday mass since 1979 The Parish of St. John Bosco, Tinsukia was opened on 8th January 1980. The parish caters mainly to the Tea Garden labourers. It was culled out of the parishes of Dibrugarh, Doom Dooma and Naharkatia. Fr. Philip Kokkapallil was installed as Parish Priest by the episcopal delegate, Fr. Dominic Barwa. Fr. Philip Kokkapallil began an Evening School for adult education in which around 50 participated.
In 1982 the Savio School was started with K.G. The construction of the new school building began soon. In 1992, the Savio School which had classes only up to IV was upgraded to Class V. On 3rd October 2005, the new School building was blessed. It was inaugurated on 21st January 2006. The school has been renamed ‘Don Bosco School’.
Today In 2007, St. John Bosco’s Parish, Tinsukia has about 6000 Catholic population spread out in 35 villages. In 2007, there are 635 students and 17 teachers in the School. Various tribes such as Adivasi, Oraon, Munda, Kharia, Assamese, Bengalis, Biharis and Malwaris attend the school. A boarding for boys is run by the Salesians. In 2007 there are 125 boarders in the boy’s boarding run by the Salesians.
