The apostolate of higher education is of recent origin in the province of Dimapur. In a span of eight years (1995-2003) the province has established five colleges in four different States of the region: Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimpaur (1995), Don Bosco College, Maram (2000), Don Bosco Junior College, Doom Dooma (2000), Don Bosco College, Itanagar (2002) and Bosco College of Teacher Education (B.Ed college), Dimapur (2003).
Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur
Salesian College as a house of post-novitiate formation of the Salesians of Don Bosco came into being in 1982. The work of affiliating Salesian College to the Nagaland University began in 1993. The affiliation of the college to the university was granted on 4 December 1995.
The new college received the permission to offer courses in B.A General and B.A. with English and Philosophy as Majors. Currently the college offers majors in Philosophy, English and History, with English, Philosophy, History, Political Science, Sociology and Education as elective subjects. Salesian College also offers a three-year course in Philosophy and allied subjects.
In 2007, there are 209 students in the college with 15 on the staff. The Salesian College library has over 30,000 volumes and several journals. The library is open to other students of the neighbourhood. The computer centre begun in 2002 offers various courses to students.
Don Bosco Junior College, Doom Dooma
The Don Bosco Junior College Doomdooma was begun on 1 August 2000. The main purpose of the college is to provide higher education to the catholic students from Doom Dooma and the surrounding parishes. At present classes are held in two classrooms adjusted in the existing hostel building. The principal’s office is in the residential quarters of the Salesians. The most important requirement of the college is proper infrastructure as per the requirement of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council. A comprehensive project consisting of animation programmes, educational programmes, economic empowerment programmes and a multi-purpose hall is being built.
Don Bosco College, Maram
Don Bosco College Maram started functioning from July 2000. There are 5 Salesians on the staff. Since its beginning the college has made rapid progress. There is a graduate college with Higher Secondary Arts and Commerce sections. In 2007, there are 1330 students in Don Bosco College Maram. Of these 665 belong to the Degree courses (B.A., B.Com and B.Sc.) and 477 in Higher Secondary (Arts) and 188 in (Commerce). There are 68 in the Staff of which 54 are in the teaching staff. The college has the following departments: Sociology, History, Political Science, English, Commerce and Computer Science. In 2006 the college started offering B.Sc also to students to pursue science.
The college aims to make a harmonious blend of faith and culture; to build men and women of right principles, to strive after excellence, to be selfless in the service of people and promote social justice and to make learning more relevant, practical and life oriented.
The college also has a Vocational Training Institute that provides job-oriented courses in carpentry, welding, masonry, low-cost constructions (stabilised mud block making), typing, handloom, and agro-related and food/fruit processing courses.
The college also conducts programmes on personality development, entrepreneurship training, sound values and life-skills. The community college conducts programmes for village youth, such as, mushroom cultivation, vermin compost programme, duckery, noodle and meat production, fashion designing, poultry, swine and cattle rearing, etc.
The IGNOU study centre offers courses in BA & B.Com, Certificate courses in Computing, Bachelor of Tourism, Diploma in Tourism, etc.
The Human Resource Development Centre (HRD) is a training centre that has plans to conduct workshops, seminars, symposia, coaching classes, competitions and residential training programmes. Training programmes include Bee keeping, Orchid farming, grow vegetable programme, lamination and screen printing, Computer training programme with the installation of V-Sat link, Instant typing tutor programme, Desk Top Publication (DTP), career guidance, etc. 154 students are registered for regular courses at the computer centre and 25 students are registered for career guidance programme and they are given career oriented exams and interview practice.
Don Bosco College, Itanagar
Don Bosco College, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, started through the initiative of Fr. Jose Chemparathy (C.C.) with Fr. Sebastian Karottupuram as the first Principal of the college. The new session was inaugurated on 4th August 2002 by Mr. Joram Begi, Director of Higher and Technical Education, Arunachal Pradesh. There were 36 students and three lecturers at the time of inauguration. The College was granted permission to begin honours courses in four subjects namely, English, Economics, Political Science and History. Since its beginning the number has steadily increased which necessitated more space. The foundation was laid for the new College building in September 2004 and the new building was inaugurated on 29 September 2006. New buildings, commerce block and confreres’ quarters, are under construction.
The college introduced Commerce stream, honours in Sociology, and computer classes along with VSAT internet connection in 2007. In 2007 the College has 425 students and 18 lecturers on the staff. There is a hostel for boys run by the Salesians with 44 boys and another hostel for girls run by the FMA sister with 70 students. There are also number of other private hostels that have come up in the neighbourhood providing accommodation for students.
Salesian College of Teacher Education (B.Ed College), Dimapur
It has been a long cherished dream of the province of Dimapur to start a B.Ed. college in the province in order to train future educators. The idea was discussed way back in 1993-1995 and it figured in the formal applications made to the Government of Nagaland and the Nagaland University in 1994 and 1995 by Fr. Jose Kuruvachira, the then Dean of Studies of Salesian College.
In the year 2000 the question of starting a B.Ed college was considered once again by the province and Fr. Cyprian Kallikaden, the then Principal of Salesian College of Higher Education, was requested by the province to follow up the matter. The University of Nagaland granted permission to start the B. Ed college on 16 December 2002, and the authorisation from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Regional Committee, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, was given on 28 January 2003. The last phase of the work of getting the B.Ed college approved was followed up by Fr. Augustine Kuzhikannam. The B.Ed classes began on 1 March 2003. The first principal of the B.Ed college was Sr.Gertrude (Marykutty), SABS, an experienced B.Ed principal from South India. The first batch (2003) consisted of 62 students (35 Female and 27 Male): 23 religious sisters, 10 SDBs, 4 priests and 25 others.
